The Borough Council leadership has worked hard over the last two years to improve borough communications. Meeting agendas and proposed ordinances are now posted online. Council and commission meetings are accessible to the public via video conference, and recordings are available via the borough website. In addition, they have established a quarterly newsletter and provided specialized information letters to residents.
Looking ahead, there is still a need for additional improvements. The borough should implement an electronic communication system so that residents can sign up to receive updates via email or text message. In addition, the borough should use its Facebook page more consistently to disseminate urgent information. The borough website also needs to be better organized to allow residents to navigate through the site intuitively to be able to find the information and resources that they need.
Consistent code enforcement is an important part of what keeps Aldan a beautiful community with safe buildings and infrastructure. We need to ensure that the code is enforced fairly and respectfully and that communication is consistent and responsive. In addition, we need to review all existing and historic borough codes to confirm that they still fit our needs in the 21st century.
In Aldan, our police department has a long and proud history of professionalism and community engagement. We must ensure that our police force is fully and regularly trained in de-escalation techniques and other current professional practices in order to ensure that every member consistently maintains the highest standards. With over half of the borough's budget allocated to fund our police department, it is the important responsibility of the Borough Mayor and Council to provide active oversight of this department.
With two of our candidates on the borough resident recycling committee, we are actively working to bring back affordable and verifiable recycling services to the borough. Once in office, we will use our positions to push our state and federal officials for systemic reforms of recycling and waste management. In addition, we will encourage tree planting in the borough and will actively explore the feasibility of bringing curbside leaf pick up to the borough.
